Day 18: Juan in A Million on Cesar Chavez

MOAAAR breakfast tacos!
But this is THE breakfast taco.

Juan in a Million opened their doors in 1980 and have been serving Tex-Mex classics ever since. But the only reason I go there is for the Don Juan. This taco is really just a mountain of eggs, potatoes, cheese, bacon, and magic mounded on top of a single tortilla, invisible under all that deliciousness. You can order more tortillas to make tacos or you can just dump on some salsa and scarf it all down with a fork.

Paul and I shared this beast by ordering 4 extra tortillas. That's right, we made 5 big fat tacos out of El Taco Grande.

Juan in a Million has two indoor seating areas and a large outdoor patio, and this is why I want to take a minute to discuss a critical topic for patio diners in Austin...

The Grackle!

This ragged beast is a plague upon Austin streets. He has multiplied and adapted to his urban environment. When sitting outside enjoying a meal you cannot avoid the plotting wrath of the ubiquitous grackle. With his wily gaze, razor sharp beak, and once glossy black and blue feathers turned scraggly with street dirt, he waits and watches as you eat your meal. Occasionally he swoops past, testing your reflexes. He hops around on empty tables stealing sugar packets and chip crumbs.

Then the second you step away from your table, the winged critters descend. Clawing and pecking at your scraps and each other, they have no qualms about eating that bit of egg left on your plate.

Enjoy the Don Juan if you dare to brave the watchful eye of the grackle.
