Day 8: El Alma on Barton Springs

El Alma is one of my favorite places for happy hour. The drinks are very good and the appetizers are delicious and half price from 3-6 every day. I ordered a frozen lime margarita. You can taste the alcoholic buzz of the tequila, but it doesn't over power the citrusy lime and the light sweetness. I'm not a big sangria fan, but if you are then try the one at El Alma. The flavor of the wine comes through and is perfectly balanced with the fruit juice.

The ceviche at El Alma is even better than at Takoba. The lime gives a real punch but it doesn't overwhelm the fish and your tastebuds can still enjoy the tanginess of the pickled onion.

Since there are so many amazing entres to choose from, I asked the waitress to recommend their signature dish. She immediately pointed out the Duck Enchiladas Enmoladas. These enchiladas are stuffed with shredded duck and covered in the most amazing, rich, but not overwhelming, dark mole sauce. The slaw is made of carrots and cabbage, lightly marinated in citrus, and topped with cotija cheese. Each individual perfectly cooked piece of fluffy rice sits atop the next and is dotted with peas, and seasoned with salt and lime.

El Alma is one of those Tex-Mex joints that is a cut above the rest. For me, it fits in with the schmancy foodie restaurants that are popping up everywhere in Austin but when you're there you don't feel bad if you show up in a tank top and you don't know what "enmoladas" means. (It means covered in mole sauce; it just sounds prettier doesn't it?) El Alma is absolutely among the best Tex-Mex/Mexican restaurants in town.
